I am Richard Schmidt, the current Boa Nnipa (BN) volunteer from Berlin (Germany), and I would like to share my experiences so far being in Ghana with you.

End of October in Germany – cold, grey and grubby; end of October in Ghana – hot, sunny and sweat-inducing. By having an uncertain feeling about what is going to happen in the next 4 months, finally my time being a volunteer for BN in Ghana started. As you know big trips also have some troubles, so I had some difficulties by passing the Passport Control at first. Luckily after a while I could meet my little welcoming committee of Sammy, the Director of BN, Agyengo, the Project Coordinator of BN, and Pauletta, a former BN tutor, at the Accra Kotoka International Airport. The first night already introduced me in the vivid nightlife of Accra. Loud and rhythmic music, a lot of liquors and very open-minded people were part of my first night in Ghana. If you like it or not, by being a “Obroni” (white person) you definitely attract attention within the society. This is why a lot of strangers start a conversation with me. Honestly this huge interest about me is in need getting used to it, but I also realize an advantage about it, because I always get into new conversations which facilitate me to get to know the people and the country. By the next day I already find out the huge impact of churches in Ghana. Going to church on Sunday in Ghana is like a safe bet of hearing the word “Amen” in church. In my hometown Berlin I already knew a typical African gospel church service which helped me to feel comfortable in this very different atmosphere to a German church service. I can tell you for sure: Once you get in this world, you feel a spirit which is unique. To be continued...
